occurs seconds after injury. Death during this period results from laceration of the brain, spinal cord, heart and great vessel
first critical period
period occurs in the first 4 hours following an injury, intracranial hemorrhage, laceration of the liver/spleen or significant blood loss from multiple injury
second critical period
period occurs weeks following from infection and multiple organ failure
third critical period
1.Clear airway must be established
2.Acute bleeding must be controlled
3.Immobilization of the patient (extreme care of the spine to protect the spinal cord)
Trauma victim is taken to the closest appropriate medical facility
Transportation of the trauma victim
second triage assesment:
arrival to medical field
1.Patient’s state of consciousness
2.Vital signs
3.Pupil size and light reaction, motor activity of extremities
4.Evaluations with portables x-rays
Transportation of the Trauma Victim

2.Acute bleeding must be controlled
3.Immobilization of the patient (extreme care of the spine to protect the spinal cord)
provide total care for all injuries. Require 24hr in house coverage, radiographer for emergency, fluro, surgical imaging, CT, angiography, sonography, nuclear medicine studies*Usually in major metro area
