What is a critical incident
Often unexpected, stressful event overwhelming one’s usual coping mechanisms and ability to function
What can a critical incident result in
Psychological distress and possible impairment of normal reactions or functions

What is CISM/what does it do
Event is retold through each person’s perspective to allow for emotional release; is helps prevent PTSD
What are the 7 core principles of crisis intervention
Simplicity, brevity, innovation, pragmatism, proximity, immediately, expectancy
Defusing for CISM
Sorter than debriefing, 30-60 mins, less than 24hr after the incident
Debriefing for CIBC
7 phase structured discussion, lasts 2-3hr, 24-72hr after incident
What is the goal of CISM
Reduce traumatic impacts, educate on stress reduction, speed recovery
What are the 7 steps in the debriefing process
Introduction, fact, thought, reaction, symptom, teaching, re-entry
What is SAFER-R
Stabilize (meets needs)
Acknowledge (the crisis)
Facilitate (normalization)
Encourage effective coping
