trauma=case studies Flashcards
if hit by a baseball bat weighed 5 kg and was travelling at 5 km/hr when it hit your head, how much energy would your head absorb
the amount of energy that your head would absorb would be 25 kg of impact force
what helps establish an index of suspicion of trauma
knowing the forces involved or the enrgy that caused the injury eg speed, wt
ar acceleration/deceleration injuries often evident
no. often no outward signs of injury
what sttructures might be damaged by a heavy blood filled organ like the spleen quickly accelerating/deceling
the ligaments and tendons that hold it in place might shear and snap eg find liver in pelvis
what is axial loading.
what kind of accidents cause this
The impact force travels along the spine while the body collapses around the injury also creating significant flexion and extension forces.
Axial loading occurs when energy is transmitted down the length of the spinal column.
This is the mechanism of injury involved when a person dives head first into shallow water and hits the top of his head on the bottom or when a person jumps from a significant height and lands on his feet.
what kind of forces cause someone hit in the head to lose consciousness
The rotational force applied to the brain stem wrings blood out of the vessels that perfuse the reticular activating system and consciousness is lost.
what kind of fracture might a rotational force cause
spiral fx
what is generally larger, the entrance or exit wound
