Define stressor
Any situation or event that requires the individual to make an adjustment
What is a stress response
A sum total of all the psychological, behavioural and physiological adjustments
Criteria for PTSD
TRAUMA
Traumatic event
Re-experience the event
Avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma

+ negative alterations in cognition and mood
What are the intrusive symptoms associated with the traumatic event in PTSD?
RIMIND
Recurrent, intrusive, involuntary distressing memories
Marked physiological reactions to internal/external cues that symbolise aspect of trauma
Intense or prolonged psychological distress at exposure to internal or external cues that symbolise event
Nightmares (recurrent and distressing) of content related to traumatic event
Dissociative reactions (ie flashbacks) in which the individual feels or acts as if the traumatic event is recurring
DSM for PTSD
A: experience a trauma
B: experience intrusive symptoms relating to trauma
C: effort to avoid stimuli of trauma
D: negative cognitive and mood symptoms
E: marked alterations in arousal or reactivity associated with the trauma
F: duration of disturbance >1 month
G: significant impairment or distress
H: not attributable to physiological effects of substance or another medical condition

What is adjustment disorder
Difficulty coping with a stressful life event or situation = develop acute often transient, emotional or behavioural symptoms that resemble less severe versions of other psychiatric conditions
DSM for adjustment disorder
A: development of emotional or behavioural symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor, occurring within 3 months of onset of the stressor
B: clinically significant emotional and behaviour symptoms causing 1) impaired functioning, 2) marked distress in excess of what would be expected
C: disturbance does not meet criteria for another mental disorder and is not exacerbation of pre-existing mental disorder
D: is not normal bereavement
E: one stressor is terminated, symptoms do not persist for more than additional6 months
