Obessive And Compulsive Related Disorders Flashcards

1
Q

Define compulsion

A

Repetitive behaviour or mental acts (eg praying, counting) that the individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession or according to the rules that must be applied rigidly. These acts are performed to reduce anxiety, or preventing some dreaded event or situation, however these mental acts are not connected in a realistic way to what they are used to neutralise and are clearly excessive.
