  • blunt more than penetrating
  • rib fractures less likely
  • pulmonary contusion more likely without rib fractures
  • airway and vascular injury less likely
  • ventilatory and circulatory compromise more common due to mediastinal shift
  • hypotension is late sign due to greater cardiopulmonary reserve
  • aerophagia more likely
  • vascular, tracheal and diaphragmatic injuries less likely
