- less common
- blunt more than penetrating
- rib fractures less likely
- pulmonary contusion more likely without rib fractures
- airway and vascular injury less likely
- ventilatory and circulatory compromise more common due to mediastinal shift
- hypotension is late sign due to greater cardiopulmonary reserve
- aerophagia more likely
- vascular, tracheal and diaphragmatic injuries less likely
