Trauma Flashcards
What is included in a trauma stamp?
Sinus
Colour
Mobility
TTP
Percussion Note
Sensibility tests- ethyl chloride, EPT
Radiograph
What types of resorption can occur?
External surface
External inflammatory
Internal inflammatory
Replacement resorption-ankylosis
What is external surface resorption?
Damage to PDL which subsequently heals
Non-progressive e.g. maxillary canines or laterals, excessive orthodontic forces
What is external inflammatory resorption?
Damage to PL initially. Maintained and propagated by necrotic pulp tissue via dentinal tubules
Progressive
How do you diagnose external inflammatory resorption?
Root surfaces indistinct
Tramlines of root canal intact
Moth eaten appearance on x-ray
What is the treatment for external inflammatory resorption?
Pulp extirpation
Mechanical debridement and chemical irrigation
Non-setting CaOH 4-6 weeks then obturate
What is internal inflammatory resorption?
Initiated by non-vital pulp
Progressive
What is the diagnosis for internal inflammatory resorption?
Tramlines of root canal indistinct
Root surfaces intact
Internal ballooning of canals seen on radiograph
What is the treatment for internal inflammatory resorption?
Extirpation
Mechanical debridement and chemical irrigation
Non-setting CaOH 4-6 weeks then obturate
What is replacement resorption?
Initiated by severe damage to PL. Normal repair does not occur, bone is fused directly to dentine
Progressive, tooth gradually resorbed as it is not part of bone remodelling
How do you diagnose replacement resorption?
Loss of PL and lamina dura
On percussion- different sound
What is pulp canal obliteration?
Response of a vital pulp
Progressive hard tissue formation within pulp cavity
Gradual narrowing of pulp chamber and pulp canal- total or partial obliteration
What are the types of root fracture healing?
Calcified tissue
Granulation tissue
Osseous tissue
Non-healing
–granulation tissue detected as black mass round fracture line on radiograph
