Arterial bleed
Bright red, gushing or squirting
Difficult to control with pressure, may need tourniquet
Venous bleed
Dark red and flows steadily
Controlled with direct pressure
Capillary bleed
Dark or intermediate red
Slowly oozing
Controlled with dressings
Tourniquet placement
2-3 inches above wound
Do NOT apply over joint
Should not be placed over clothing
Do not place dressing over tourniquet
Tested up to 120-150 min
Tighten until pulse disappears
Hemostatic dressing indications
If bleeding not controlled by tourniquet or tourniquet not indicated
Shock management
High flow oxygen
Supine position
Prevent heat loss
Immediate transport if ALS > 10 min
Tourniquet indications
Uncontrolled extremity bleeding - unresponsive to direct pressure
Amputated or mangled extremity
Isolate penetrating extremity trauma with shock
