Trauma Flashcards
What are the 3 mechanisms that may produce ocular trauma?
Blunt trauma
Penetrating trauma
Burns
What can result from blunt-force trauma?
Blow-out fracture
Eye is forced backwards transferring force onto the bones of the orbital wall.
How may a blow-out fracture present?
Can present with only impaired movement.
More common in children.
What movement is lost if inferior rectus muscle is trapped in blowout fracture?
Cannot look upwards
What should be checked in subconjunctival haemorrhage?
Blood pressure
Visual acuity
What is hyphaemia?
The presence of blood in the anterior chamber.
Indicates serious ocular pathology.
What are zonules?
Suspensory ligaments responsible for holding the lens in position.
How does retinal detachment occur?
May be a result of trauma.
Vitreous gel is disrupted, tugging a hole in the retina. Over time, fluid gets behind this and pulls it off the posterior wall of the orbit.
What is the initial management of a penetrating ocular injury?
Image prior to removal of foreign body.
CT scan is preferred.
How should chemical injuries to the eye be managed?
Immediate irrigation
The solution to pollution is dilution.
