Trasnsition Metals Flashcards
Transition metals
Form at least one stable ion with a partially filled d sub shell
D block element
Element which has an atom with its highest energy electron in a d sub shell/ orbital
Complex ion
Complex ion are formed by the co ordination if a lone pair of electrons from a donor (ligand) to an atom or cation (acceptor) which has empty orbitals to accommodate
Ligand
Ion or molecule that is capable of donating one or more lone pairs of electrons via a coordinate bond to a central metal atom or ion in a complex
Monodentate ligand
Uses only one lone pair of electrons to form a coordinate bond with a central metal atom or ion in a complex
Polydentate / chelating ligand
Uses many lone pair of electrons to form more than 2 coordinate bonds with a central metal atom or ion in a complex
Coordination number
Number of coordination bonds from the ligand to the central metal atom or ion in a complex
Deprotonation
Removal of a proton/ H+ ion from a substance
