Transverse and longitudinal waves Flashcards
What occurs when a wave travels through a medium
particles of the medium oscillate and transfer energy between each other - particles stay in same place, only energy is transferred
Top of wave =
Bottom of wave =
crest
trough
What’s a frequency ?
Number of complete waves passing a certain point per sec.
1 Hz = one wave per second
What’s a amplitude ?
maximum displacement of a point on the wave from its equilibrium position
What’s a wavelength ?
Distance between same point on two adjacent waves
Formula that links wave speed ,frequency and wave length
v = f(\lambda )
wave speed ( m/s) = frequency ( Hz ) x wavelength ( m )
What is a transverse wave ?
Oscillation are perpendicular ( up and down ) to the direction of energy transfer
types include :
- electromagnetic waves
- waves on a string
- seismic s waves
- water waves
What is a longitudinal wave ?
Oscillation are parallel ( side ) to the direction of energy transfer .
types include :
- sound waves
- seismic p waves
