Newtons first and second laws Flashcards
What is Newtons first law?
Resultant force is needed to make something start moving, speed up or slow down
What happens if the force on an stationary object is zero
The object will remain stationary
What happens if the force on an moving object is zero
It’ll carry on moving at same velocity
So for example if a vehicle like a car was driving at constant velocity how would Newtons law apply?
The resistive ,driving forces must all be balanced
Velocity will only change if there’s a non - zero resultant force acting on object
1) a non - zero resultant force will always produce an acceleration in the direction of force
2) This acceleration will take 5 different form, starting, stopping, speeding up, slowing down , changing direction
3) on free body diagram , the arrows will be unequal
The larger the resultant force acting on the object ..
Why?
the more the object accelerates
Force and acceleration are directly proportional
What is force inversely proportional to?
The mass of the object
An object with larger mass will accelerate less than An object with smaller mass
What is newtons second law?
F (N) = m (kg) a (m/s^2)
