Transverse and Longitudinal waves Flashcards
what do waves transfer
energy
give 2 examples of things that wave motion can be shown by
a spring, water waves
what is the formula for wave speed?
v = f x ⁁ , wave speed (m/s)=frequency (Hz) x wavelength (m)
how will a cork behave in water when waves are present
it will bop up and down as the wave passes but not move in the direction of the wave
describe a transverse wave
a transverse wave causes the particles in the medium to vibrate at a right angle to the direction of the wave’s motion. an example of this is a cork in water.
describe a longitudinal wave
a longitudinal wave causes the particles in the medium to vibrate in the same direction as the wave’s motion. an example of this are sound waves
what is the formula for wave frequency?
f = n/t, frequency (Hz) = number of vibrations/time
what is the amplitude of a wave
the largest distance that a point on the wave moves from its rest position
what is the wavelength of a wave
the distance between two adjacent wavefronts
what is the symbol for wavelength
⁁
what is a wavelength
the distance between one point on the wave and the next point that is in the same part of the cycle
what is an oscillation
an oscillation is a repeated motion
what is the frequency of a wave
the number of cycles per second (symbol f, unit hertz, or Hz)
describe a longer wavelength
fewer crests and lower frequency
describe a shorter wavelength
more crests with higher frequency
