electric fields Flashcards
what is an electric field
an area where there is a force on the charged particles
what is the arrangement for a positive charge?
lines closer together = stronger fields
lines pointing away = positive charge is repelled
what will repel and what will attract
two same charges will repel while two different charges will attract
what is the arrangement for negative charges?
the lines point inwards = positive charge is attracted
P.S. if the field strength gets very large, there will be a spark
what are some similarities and differences between electric and magnetic fields
similarities:
- opposites still attract
- same still repel
- produced by two kinds of charges/poles
differences:
- there can be a neutral charge in electric, but not in magnetic
- magnetic fields always form loops, electric fields stand on the positive charge and end on the negative
what is a danger of electrical fields and how is it dealt with
in surgical rooms, the surgeons need to be careful not to cause any sparks so they have conducting floors that will keep the patients earthed
what is a use of an electrical fields
the paint droplets in a spray gun that are used to spray a car are positively charged while the car panels are negative, so the paint will stick better
