how is TURP completed
a combined visual and surgical instrument (resectoscope) is inserted into the tip of the penis into the urethra, the prostate which surrounds the urethra and is blocking the flow of urine is trimmed away
indications
symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia such as increased frequency of urination, difficulty starting urination, feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder, UTIs
to prevent complications due to blocked urine flow, such as UTIs, kidney or bladder damage
complications
difficulty urinating for a few days following surgery, therefore a catheter is required, however this increases risk of UTIs
dry orgasm (release of semen into the bladder rather than out of the penis)
erectile dysfunction
bleeding (TURP not recommended in men who are on blood thinning agents)
