What is the pre-contemplation phase?
- A safe place for an individual because they deny having an addiction and any issues.
- Their denial is a protective mechanism.
- “I don’t have a problem” mindset to prevent from feeling shame.
What is the contemplation phase?
- Contemplating good things versus bad things.
- Weighing out the options.
- Starting to realize that maybe there is a problem.
What is the mini phase between contemplation and action? And what happens there?
Preparation. It’s the getting ready part. How are you going to go about fixing your problem?
What is the action phase?
- A change the person decides to make.
- Uncomfortable, foreign, new things to deal with.
- Not always successful.
- Gets easier overtime.
What is the maintenance phase?
- Getting over initial difficulty.
- Things start to feel more comfortable.
What is relapse?
When an individual goes backwards in the phases instead of moving forwards. Happens often. Often caused by stressful events.
What are the goals of the pre-contemplation phase?
- To get them to contemplate, understand that they’re in denial.
- To not shame the individual.
What is the goal of the action phase?
Give support.
What is the goal of the maintenance phase?
Give support.
