- Figuring out our purpose of existence.
- Everybody has got their own path, you can’t plan it for them.
- It’s impossible to know what’s perfect.
- Believing that finding purpose/meaning helps with hard times.
What is humanism?
- People are initially good but bad things interfere.
- People need judgment-free environments to be authentic and honest.
- Uniqueness of human beings and their capacity for choice, growth, and psychological health.
Name an existential-humanistic philosopher and what his belief was?
Frankl: “There is nothing in the world…that would so effectively help one survive even the worst conditions as the knowledge that there is meaning in one’s life.”
Name another existencial-humanistic philosopher and what their belief was?
Sartre: “We do not judge the people we love”.
True or false, existential philosophy comes from humanistic philosophy?
False, it’s the other way around.
What is the main idea of existential-humanistic psychology?
People need the freedom to find their unique “meaning”.
What is Unconditional Positive Regard?
- The way to provide the needed freedom from judgement.
- Acceptance.
- Supproting a person no matter what they say or do.
What is Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs?
Maslow introduced a hierarchy of human needs including physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, and self-actualization which are all needed to achieve the freedom needed for people to find their meaning.
Where is self-actualization place on the pyramid?
At the top.
