Transporters Flashcards
What is a transporter?
A protein which helps move molecules across a membrane in or out of the cell
What is Prozac?
Antidepressant drug
What is Prozac mechanism of action for depression?
Prozac (fluoxetine) blocks the 5HT reuptake transporter (a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), increasing serotonin levels
What is Omeprazole?
A proton pump inhibitor (PPI), used to treat acid-related disorders.
What is Omeprazole mechanism of action?
Irreversibly inhibits the gastric proton pump (H⁺/K⁺-ATPase)in the stomach lining
What is a proton pump?
Transports H+ ions
What are some medical uses of proton pump inhibitors?
Peptic ulcers,
GERD - gastroesophageal reflux disease,
Gastrin producing tumour
What are ion channels?
Pores in the membrane made up of proteins that allow ions to go in and out of cell
What describes the electrical difference between the inside and outside of a cell.
Membrane potential
What describes a rapid, temporary change in a cells membrane potential that allows neurons, muscle cells, and other excitable cells to transmit electrical signals?
Action potential
