the government giving minimal support to slave trading merchants in order to maintain the West African forts
why did the government’s attitude to maintaining these forts change?
wanted to instead support merchants who struggled to meet maintenance costs in the mid-18th century, demonstrating the importance of the sugar trade.
how did the British dominate the slave trade?
through it’s commitment to sugar
their naval dominance also replaced the Dutch, making them the main supplier of slaves to European colonies

half of these slaves went to British colonies and the other half were sold to other colonies in America
later in the century, it had risen to 100,000 per year, making Britain’s share even larger
