Transportation in cells Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
How can the rate of diffusion be affected?
The concentration gradient
The temperature
The surface area of the cell membrane separating the different regions
Concentration gradient in diffusion
The greater the difference in concentration, the quicker, the rate of diffusion
The temperature in diffusion
The higher the temperature, the more kinetic energy of the particles will have said they will move and mix more quickly
The surface area in diffusion
The greater the surface area, the force of the rate of diffusion
Do bigger or smaller objects have a larger surface area to volume ratio.
Smaller objects
What do large organisms have to help with their small surface area to volume ratio?
Mechanisms to increase surface area, proportionally such as additional absorbing areas or adaptions of shape
Have transport systems such as the circulatory system
What is osmosis?
The diffusion of water molecules from region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration through a partially permeable membrane
Higher sugar concentration means.. (osmosis)
Lower water concentration
What molecules can pass through a partially permeable membrane?
Irons, sugars and amino acids
What is active transport?
Substances are transported passively down the concentration gradient
Substances have moved from a low to a high concentration - against the concentration gradient
Requires energy
