Transportation Flashcards
What are the 4 transportation methods
Traction, saltation, suspension and solution
What is traction
Large stones or boulders rolled along the river bed by water moving downstream.
When does traction occur
When there is high discharge
What is saltation
Small stones bounce or leapfrog along the channel bed
When does saltation occur
When there is high energy conditions
What is suspension
Small particles of sand and silt are carried along by the flow of the river (held up by the turbulence)
What is solution
Dissolved materials are transported within the mass of the moving water
What is the capacity of a river
The amount of material a river can carry (the total load volume)
What is competence
The diameter of the largest particle that it can carry for a given velocity
Where does a river obtain its load
Either from material washed or fallen in; or material eroded from the bed and banks
