Transport systems: Animals Flashcards
MEMORISE
Animal need transport system to deliver:
Glucose and the gas oxygen to cells and remove carbon dioxide
Blood is composed of liquid:
Plasma: red and white blood cells
Red blood cells contains:
haemoglobin
Red blood cells are specialised to carry out their functions:
- biconcave shape for increased surface area and diffusion
- no nucleus to increase their oxygen carrying capacity
- contain haemoglobin to bind oxygen
Cellular defence against:
Pathogens is brought by white blood cells: lymphocytes and Phagocytes
Phagocytes carry out phagocytosis:
and engulfs the pathogen
Capillaries
on cell thick, large surface area
veins
wide channel, thin muscular wall, carries blood under low pressure to heart, valves
arteries
narrow channel, thick muscular wall, blood carried away from heart under high pressure
Heart is made of:
cardiac muscle
Pulmonary Artery is
to carry deoxygenated blood to the lungs
pulmonary vein is
to carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
aorta
carries blood to the heart
vena cava carries blood:
to the heart
