Transport systems Flashcards
What are the two paths our blood circulates in?
Heart to Lungs to Heart (1st)
Heart to the rest of the body to the Heart (2nd)
Cells need to…
be constantly supplied with oxygen and nutrients
remove waste products
Why do unicellular organisms not need a transport system?
Substances move in and out of the cell directly
Why do multicellular organisms need a transport system?
Most of their cells are not in contact with the environment and cannot obtain oxygen and nutrients directly
What is a heart?
An organ that pumps blood around the body. It is about the size of our fist and the walls are made of muscles.
What are blood and its functions?
A liquid that carries substances such as nutrients, oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from cells in the body.
What does blood contain?
Red blood cells that do not contain a nucleus so can carry more haemoglobin which combines with oxygen to be carried around the body.
