transport innovations and globalisation Flashcards
steam power advancements
innovation in the 1800s using steam tech to move goods and armies along trade routes in asia and africa
how has steam power accelerated globalisation
it enabled goods and people to move around the globe, so trade can develop
railways advancements
since the 1800s, the rail network has advanced, and rail networks are still commonly used around the globe today
examples of rail networks
Trans Siberian Railway -> Moscow with China and Japan (900km in 1904)
how have rail networks accelerated globalisation
allow national locations as well as international locations to be better and more quickly connected, allowing for the movement of people as well as trading
jet aircraft
budget airline companies allow for more accessible transport to wider locatons (cheaper and faster than boat), appealing to holiday makers
how has jet aircraft accelerated globalisation
it has allowed for more holidays and a wider range of tourist destinations for people, so it is easier to travel to more countries
containerships
200 million individual container movements take place, and they can carry lots of containers to transport goods around the world
how has containerisation accelerated globalisation
Allows for ‘bulk’ movement of goods as lots of containers containing hundreds of goods can be transported, reducing time at ports as containers can be easily transferred (overall journey time shorter)
also is cheaper to move so appeals to companies
containerisation examples
Chinese vessel Cosco is 336m long and 48wide, so can carry 13,000 containers
