Transport in Plants Flashcards
What are Dicotyledonous?
Seeds that have 2 cotyledons(seed leaves)
What are Herbaceous dicots?
Have soft tissues and short life cycle- they die back at the end of the growing system.
What are Arborescent dicots?
Have hard lignified tissues and a long life cycle- can live for many many years.
What is a vascular system?
A transport system
What is a vascular bundle?
How transport tissues are arranged
What does the Xylem transport?
It transports fluids and mineral salts up the stems from the roots to the leaves.
What way does the xylem transport substances?
Only travels up.
What does the Phloem transport?
It transports materials made in photosynthesis (sugars and amino acids) to other parts of the plant.
What way does the Phloem transport substances?
Two way flow.
What are the 3 main reasons why multicellular plants need transport systems?
-Metabolic demands
-size
-surface area to volume ratio
Why does metabolic demands need transport systems?
-Glucose and oxygen need to be transported to and waste products of cell metabolism removed from internal and underground parts of the plant.
-Hormones need to transported to areas that can have an effect.
-Mineral ions transported (from roots )to all cells for proteins(enzymes + cell structure).
Why does size need transport systems?
