Transport In Plants Flashcards
What is the xylem
A tissue containing tubes called vessels they are responsible for the transport of water and mineral salts
What is the phloem
A tissue containing tubes called sieve tubes they are responsible for transport through the plant for organic solutes
What are dicotyledon
They are flowering plants they are characterised by the fact that the seed has two cotyledons and have a a wide blade and narrow stalk
What is the parenchyma
A basic plant tissue typically used as packing tissue between more specialised structures
What is the collenchyma
A modified form of parenchyma which have more cellulose and are used to provide support to the leaf
What is the sclerenchyma
A plant tissue consisting of thick walled cells with purely mechanical function of supporting the cell wall
Why does the stem of a plant have more xylem then the root
As the stem is exposed to environmental changes they have more xylem to act as support to keep the plant stem upright
How does the water move up the stem
The water moves up the stem by the process of transpiration in which water is lost by the lead causing a negative water potential forcing water from the stem to move up towards the leaf
What are xerophytes
A plant adapted to survive in conditions where water supply is low
What are characteristic of xerophytes
They have spike like projections what reduces water loss along with there stem containing chlorophyll so that they may carry out photosynthesis
