Transport in Humans (circulatory system) Flashcards
describe the composition of blood
plasma 55%
red blood cells 45%
white blood cells + platelets <1%
what is blood
blood is a fluid that transports substances around the body
what substances are delivered by the blood
-oxygen
-carbon dioxide
-digested food (e.g glucose, amino acids)
-thermal energy (heat)
-hormones
-urea
main function of the circulatory system
its important to deliver reactants of respiration, and to dispose of waste products of respiration
structure & function of red blood cells
structure = biconcave shape; no nucleus; contain haemoglobin
function = transport oxygen (and some carbon dioxide)
structure & function of white blood cells+type
structure = large blood cells; lobed nucleus
function = engulf pathogens; make antibodies to fight infections
types = lymphocytes & phagocytes
structure & function of plasma
structure = straw-coloured liquid, made mostly of water
function = to carry carbon dioxide, nutrients (digested food), hormones, heat, urea
structure & function of platelets
structure = fragments of cells
function = to clot blood at a wound to prevent infection and blood loss
pathogen definition
an organism or virus that causes a disease
