Cell Biology Flashcards
Draw a labeled animal cell
Draw a labeled plant cell
Define nucleus
The nucleus contains the genetic material (DNA) of the organism and controls the cell’s activities
Define cytoplasm
The liquid that makes up most of the cell in which chemical reactions happen. It is mainly water
Define cell membrane
A flexible outer layer that surrounds the cell and controls which substances can pass in and out of it
Define mitochondria
Organelle where respiration occurs to release energy from glucose
Define cell wall
Protective outer layer surrounding the cell. Made of cellulose. Found in plant cells. Provides strength and support.
Define vacuole
A space inside the cytoplasm that contains cell sap liquid. It keeps the cell firm.
Define chloroplasts
Structures found in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs. Contains green pigment called chlorophyll.
What is the smallest unit of life?
a cell
Similarities between plant and animal cells
- nucleus
- cell membrane
- mitochondria
- ribosomes
- cytoplasm
Differences between plant and animal cells
Plants have:
- chloroplast
- vacuole
- cell wall
Plant cells have a rigid rectangular shape and animal cells have a smaller round shape.
Name a unicellular organism
Bacteria
What are multicellular organisms?
Organisms that have different types of cells with different functions (also known as specialised cells)
