Transport in cells Flashcards
What happens to the diffusion rate if the concentration gradient is bigger ?
The diffusion rate is greater and happens quicker
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a high concentration to a lower concentration
Does diffusion only happen in liquids and gases?
Yes
Name 3 small molecules that can diffuse through a cell membrane
Glucose
Amino acids
Water
Oxygen
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules from a higher water concentration to a lower water concentration across a semi permeable membrane
If there is not much water in a cell will water move in or out of the cell?
Shortage of water in the cell cause water to move in to the cell
What does turgid cell mean?
Turgid cells are cells full of water.
What is turgor pressure?
When the substance inside a cell push on the cell walls.this is called turgor pressure
What is a flaccid plant cell?
A plant cell that is wilting due to loss of water and therefore there is no turgor pressure
Describe a diffusion experiment
1) cut some pink agar jelly up into cubes
2) place in hydrochloric acid
3) time how long it will take to diffuse
The hydrochloric acid will diffuse into the cubes turning them from pink to clear
What is a living organism that can be used to test for osmosis ?
Potato cylinders
In an osmosis experiment. If the potato cylinders have got longer will they have drawn in water from osmosis or is water drawn out by osmosis?
Drawn in water from osmosis
Is visking tubing an example of non living or living experiment for osmosis?
Non living system
Why is the visking tubing semipermeable in an osmosis experiment?
So that water can be drawn in by osmosis
What Is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of particles against the concentration gradient. From a lower concentration to a higher concentration using energy released by respiration
