Transport In Cells Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Movement of partials from a area of higher to low concentration
What’s the rate of diffusion?
Speed of which diffusion occors
What are the three things which affect the rate of diffusion?
1- surface area
2- concentration gradient
3- temperature
What are single celled organisms
They are organisms only made up of 1 cell (very small)
What are Multicellular organisms
Organisms with a high amount of cells( humans, plants, animals)
What are organisms
A living thing which can react to stimuli , reproduce and grow.
examples - fungi , bacteria are all organisms
How are the lungs adapted for gas exchange ?
Moist walls - gases dissolve in the moisture helping them to pass across the gas exchange surface. Permeable walls - allow gases to pass through. Extensive blood supply - ensuring oxygen rich blood is taken away from the lungs and carbon dioxide rich blood is taken to the lungs.
How is the small intestine adapted for absorption of food into the blood
Small intestine if folded inwards to have a large surface area
Blood supply flows quickly through to maintain concentration gradient
How are gills In fish adapted to gas exchange
Large surface area
Transport system to maintain concentration gradient
What’s gas exchange
Gas exchange is the physical process by which gases move passively by diffusion across a surface.
What’s osmosis
The movement of water molecules from a high to a low concentration through a partially permeable membrane
