-to meet metabolic demands - diffusion over long distances is not sufficient
-SA:V ratio - amount of surface area available to absorb or remove substances gets relatively smaller
-molecules e.g. hormones and enzymes need to be transported
-respiration
-waste products need to be removed and excreted
