insects Flashcards
What can the tracheal fluid do and why?
When tissues are active, the tracheal fluid can be retracted and this increases the surface area so that more oxygen can be absorbed.
trachea
chitin. no gas exchange
tracheoles
no chitin. larger SA for gas exchange
What is a spiracle?
the openings of the tracheal system on the insect to allow air to enter and leave
What insects have an expanded tracheal system?
very active insects
How does the expanded tracheal system work?
Very active insects have air sacs that are squeezed by action of flight muscles and this ventilates the tracheal system when expansion and contraction is repeated.
How does movement of wings alter the volume of the thorax in some insects?
as volume increases, air pressure drops and air is sucked/ pushed into the tracheal system from outside
