Transport Across the Cell Membrane (lesson 6) Flashcards
What does solute mean?
Substance dissolved in the solvent
What does solvent mean?
Solute dissolved IN IT
What does solution mean?
Mixture of solute and solvent
What does diffusion mean?
Movement of solvent from high to low concentration through membrane
What is osmosis?
Movement if water along its concentration gradient
What is isotonic solution?
Two solutions have equal concentration
What is hypotonic solution?
lower concentration of solute then the cell
What is hypertonic solution?
Higher concentration of solutes on the outside of a cell than on the inside of the cell
What determines the rate of diffusion? (4 Factors)
1) Steepness of the concentration gradient
2) Temperature
3) Surface area
4) Type of molecule or ion diffusing
What is active transport?
Energy from cell moves substances across its membrane
What are the two types of active transport
1) Ion pumps
2) Bulk transport: Endocytosis and exocytosis
What is a simple definition of endocytosis?
cells take in substances by wrapping them in a small bubble (vesice)
What is a simple definition of exocytosis?
Cells move large materials out by using small bubbles (vesicles)
