transport Flashcards
nodes
junctions and terminals, a place where lines and networks cross or join
route
the connection between 2 nodes
transport network
a system of transport routes connecting a set of nodes
the greater the number of routes and nodes, …
the greater the network density
quality of transport infrastructure indicators
- Coverage
- Capacity
- Frequency
- Convenience
- Reliability
- Environmental sustainability
coverage
(Availability and reach of infrastructure)
environmental sustainability
(Environmental Impact)
Reliability
(Does it break down often? Delays?)
Frequency
(Number of occurrences of a service)
Capacity
(Number of people or amount of goods that can be
transported)
more nodes, routes and transport networks =?
denser
more complex
more accessible
accessibility
Accessibility is the ease of reaching destinations or activities.
When various modes of transport can easily reach a location/place, we say that this location is highly accessible.
impact of how good a transport system is
- Connectedness (Tourism, Trade, transfer of culture, globalization)
- Changing physical environment
- Traffic congestion
- Health risks
- Safety risks
- Increased mobility for the elderly and persons with disabilities
connectedness
- People are more mobile and this helps to strengthen and maintain social relationships
- Goods and services are more accessible and available worldwide
- There is more interaction with foreign cultures (food items, practices and traditions)
- There is more diversity and variety (people, culture etc)
impacts of transport
environmental impact
social impact
economical impact
political impact
The development of transport systems requires physical space. This results in a change in the physical environment. This impacts all who are dependent on the environment
traffic congestion
Occurs when road usage approaches or exceeds road capacity
It tends to occur during peak periods when people are rushing to school or work in the mornings or evenings
People need to commute to work/school
traffic congestion impacts
social (mental health, physical health caused by air pollution)
economic
environmental (air pollution, carbon footprint, noise pollution)
safety issues
accidents (car crashes, car fires, etc)
crimes (As traffic volume increases, some transport modes may be deemed to be less safe. Public transport can become overcrowded, especially during peak hours. Large crowds increase the risk of crimes such as theft and outrage of modesty)
terrorist attacks (cripple mobility, disrupt transit, sabotage operations, inflict huge economic costs (bombing bridges, airports, highways) (hostage/bargaining chips)
things to help people with mobility issues
silver zones
tactile guiding systems
