transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The passive movement of particles for a high concentration to a low concentration
what can the rate of diffusion be changed by?
Altering concentration gradient, temperature and surface area
for multicellular organisms, what are surfaces and organ systems specialised to do?
Exchange materials
what is the effectiveness of an exchange surface increased by?
-Having a large surface area
-Thin membrane
-Efficient blood supply (in animals)
-Being ventilated (in animals for gas exchange)
what is osmosis?
The passive movement of water from an area of higher water concentration to an area of lower water concentration across a partially permeable membrane
what are mass changes caused by?
The movement of water across a plant cell membrane
what is active transport and where does it get its energy from?
It uses energy from respiration to transport substances across a membrane from low concentration to high concentration
where is active transport used and for what?
In root hair cells and this small intestine for the absorption of nutrients
