9
Q

What is after the receiver and what does it do?

A

After the receiver is the mixer/oscillator which mixes the received 1030MHz with and 970MHz, thus resulting in an IF of 60MHz

Q

What does the DECODER do?

A

Wants to know whether if the signal is a mode A or C, then initiates the MODULATOR

19
Q

How long after P1 do we send the P2 pulse?

20
Q

If P2 is large what does that mean and what will happen?

A

We are in a sidelobe and we will suppress (not reply)

21
Q

If we are in a main beam, how large will P2 be?

22
Q

Is the side lobe suppression transmitted on the same antenna as the interrogation?

A

No it has its own OMNIDIRECTIONAL antenna

23
Q

Altitude encoding is based on what and what is it set to?

A

Based on BAROMETRIC PRESSURE, set to 29.92Hg

24
Q

What does the REPLY contain?

A

2 framing pulses, 12 pulses (octal) in between and the SPI

25
How far are the framing pulses from each other?
20.3uS
26
What is the maximum amount of pulses in a REPLY?
15 pulses
27
What is the pulse width of the pulses on a REPLY?
0.45uS
28
What is the SPI and what does it do?
Special Position Ident, can be activated by pressing the IDENT button. Only when ATC asks you to to SQWUAK IDENT.
29
How long does the SPI stay for?
30s
30
How many possible codes are there?
4096
31
Why does the transponder not have an AGC?
Amplifiers go into saturation, one at a time
32
What is the purpose of the AOC?
Feeds into the IF. CONTROLS THE GAIN OF THE VERY FIRST STAGE OF THE IF.
33
How do you trigger the AOC? What is the result of this?
When too many replies, greater than 1200. Begins to reduce the IF gain = only strongest signals
34
What is the purpose of a NOISE SUPPRESSION CIRCUIT?
Checks to see if pulse is valid or noise. Cuts the first 0.3uS of every pulse.
35
What are the 4 conditions that prevents anything from going into the decoder?
Warm up, standby, Side lobe one-shot, reply
36
What is the purpose of the DITCH DIGGER?
To see whether or not P2 is large. This sets up the ditch digger depth if P2 is greater than P1.
37
What is the purpose of the one shot?
Stretches pulses depending on the transponder. 0.725 into 0.45uS
38
What are the suppressor gates for?
Only allows pulses through if we have an appropriate lows on both sides
39
What is the length of the LOW PASS FILTER to the BAND PASS FILTER?
1 23/32 inches
40
What is the length of the Tx tube to the low pass filter?
11 inches (for duplexer)
41
Where do interrogations come from?
Ground and TCAS
42
What is the first thing you should check when troubleshooting a transponder?
Check all output voltages make sure they have correct values
43
How long does the REPLY GATE GENERATOR last?
35uS
44
What does code 7700 mean?
Emergency
45
If there is a COMMUNICATION FAILURE, what code must be inputted?
7600
46
If the code reads 7500, what does it mean?
Hijacking
