Transpiration Flashcards
Xylem structure
Vessels - long tube like structures that transport the water
No end walls so transport through middle is easy
Xylem function
Water evaporates from end of xylem (transpiration)
This creates tension in the xylem pulling more water in to the leaf
Water molecules are cohesive meaning the whole column of water is pulled upwards from leaves to roots
Water enters stem through roots
Transpiration
Evaporation of water from a plants surface
Water evaporates from the moist cell wall and accumulates in the spaces between the cells in the leaf
When stomata opens it moves out of the leaf down the water potential gradient
Factors affecting rate of transpiration
LIGHT- the more light the faster the rate of transpiration because the stomata opens in light
TEMP- the warmer the faster the rate of transpiration more kinetic energy increased conc gradient
HUMIDITY- lower the faster the rate of transpiration
WIND- more wind = faster rate because water around stomata is carried away with wind increasing the conc gradient
