Transmigration In Indonesia Flashcards
What is the transmigration in Indonesia?
Encouraging locals from highly populated islands like Java to move (migrate) to islands with a lower population such as Sumatra or West Papua to crest a more evenly distributed population
Why was the transmigration set up?
As in java the population density was around 2k per kilometre squared whereas across the island chain 100 per km squared is common.
What incentives were offered to those who moved in Indonesia?
2-4 hectares of farmland
Basic wooden house
Basic farming tools
Seed supplies for first harvest
Free transportation to the sites
FOR THE FIRST 18 MONTH
What are the positives on the transmigration?
Many participants have acquired an improvement in their quality & standard of life
Population pressures in major cities would of been much worse if the transmigration didn’t occur
95% of settlers described their current situation as very satisfactory
Provided a new start for families after 2010 mount merapi eruption
What are the negatives coming from the programme of transmigration in Indonesia?
Tension between migrants and locals
Transmigrants lacked knowledge to farm their land
Resettlement expensive $7000 per family
Just redistributed poverty around islands rather then eliminating it on main ones
Settlements were poorly planned
50 million hectares of rainforest lost
Policy seen as java government trying to gain more control over more islandso
