Functional Equivalence is…
-Idiomatic translation (phrase by phrase rather than word for word); keeping the meaning of the original language, but putting their words and sayings what would be normally understood today
Formal Equivalence is…
(Literal)
…keeping the original words, word order, grammar, etc…not all languages afford flexibility.

…someone who seeks a balance —-between a formal and functional equivalence approach; committees of people died whether or not to go with the word for word” or “phrase for phrase.”
Paraphrasing is…
-Paraphrasing from something already translated in order to make more easily understood; really not a translation at all; goes from English to English.
