Transition metals (features) Flashcards
1
Q
How would you describe them?
A
Hard and strong
2
Q
Describe their melting / boiling points
A
Typically have high melting points. However mercury is the exception, as it is a liquid as room temperature.
3
Q
Density?
A
High density.
4
Q
Reactivity?
A
Much less reactive that group 1 metals eg. with oxygen, chlorine, and water.
5
Q
Why is their reactivity useful?
A
Can be used to build things, eg. copper is used for water pipes.
6
Q
What is special about how they form ions?
A
Can form ions with different charges eg. iron can form a 2+ or 3+ ion.
7
Q
What are their compounds like?
A
They form coloured compounds eg. Copper sulphate is blue.
8
Q
What are they useful for in chemical reactions?
A
Used as a catalyst.
