Group 7 elements Flashcards
What are the group 7 elements known as?
Halogens
How many electrons do they have in their outer shells?
7
How would you describe them?
They are all non-metals with coloured vapours. They are poisonous.
What happens to their reactivity as you go down the group?
Become less reactive (as they have more shells meaning it’s harder to gain the electron)
What happens to melting and boiling points as you go down the group?
They get higher
What happens to their relative atomic masses as you go down the group?
They get higher
Can halogens form diatonic molecules?
Yes, they do this through covalent bonds. They can bond with another atom of the same element, or with other non metals.
Can halogens form ionic bonds?
Yes, they can bond with metals to form halides, such as Sodium Chloride.
Displacement reactions?
More reactive halogens will displace others, eg. Florine will displace Bromine.
