Transition Metals Flashcards
1
Q
What are the d block transition metals?
A
Metals with an incomplete d subshell in at least one of their ions. Most common metals in everyday use are transition metals.
2
Q
What happens when a transition metal atom forms an ion?
A
The electrons in the 4s subshell are lost first before the 3d electrons.
3
Q
What is the exception of Chromium and Copper?
A
There is a special stability with full (copper) and half-full (chromium) d orbitals. This is why chromium and copper do not have a full 4s subshell before the 3d subshell is filled.
