Transition metals Flashcards
Transition metal
- d block element
- forms one or more ion with an incomplete d sub-shell
Transition metal ions
- loses electrons from 4S sub-shell
- 3d electrons repel 4S electrons to higher energy level
3.
Chromium electronic configuration
[Ar]4s13d5
Copper electronic configuration
[Ar]4s13d10
Transition metal properties
- form coloured compounds in more than one oxidation state
- form coloured compounds
- act as catalysts
- form various complex ions
- high melting and boiling point
Various oxidation states
- lose 4S electrons- all form ion 2+
- similair atomic radius and ionisation energies
Heterogenous catalysts
- use d orbitals to adsorb molecules
- can be toxic
- reduce energy for industrial processes
Examples of catalysts
- iron in Haber process
- aqeous Cu2+ for zinc with acids
- MnO2 for decomposition of H2O2
Ligand
- molecule or ion
- at least one lone pair of electrons
- bonds to central metal ion by dative co-ordinate bond
Co-ordinate bond
- dative covalent
- between ligand and central metal ion
Complex ion
ion with multiple molecules/anion bound to central metal ion by co-ordinate bonds
Co-ordination number
number or co-ordinate bonds to central metal ion from surrounding ligands
Co-ordination number 6
octahedral
90°
Co-ordination number 4 with same ligand
tetrahedral
109.5°
Co-ordination number 4 with different ligands
square planar
90°
Co-ordination number 2
Linear

-H2NCH2CH2NH2-
Optical isomerism
- bidentate ligands
- octahedral
E/Z isomers square planar [MX2Y2)
- E- same vertical side
- Z- diagonal sides
E/Z isomers octahedral [M(X)2(Y)4]
- Z- X is 90° (top and triangle block)
- E- X is 180° (top and bottom)
Cis-platin advantage
- chemotherapy
- binds to DNA of cancerous cells
- prevents division
Cis-platin disadvantage
- unpleasant side-effects
- trans-platin is ineffective
Haemoglobin
- Fe2+ metal complex ion
- ligand substitution- nitrogen with oxygen
- transported round the blood
- also substituted with CO
