Transition Metals 1.4 Flashcards
What is the definition of a transition metal
They have atleast one ion with an incomplete subshell
Which transition metals do not follow the aufbau principle due to a special stability
Cu (copper) and Cr (chromium)
What is true about Transition metals and oxidation states?
They exhibit variable oxidation states of differing stability because they can not only lose their 4s but some or all in their 3d electrons
What are the rules of oxidation numbers?
1= Simple ions such as Na+ K+ Cl- count as -1 or 1
2= Oxygen is always considered to be -2
3= Hydrogen is always assumed to be +1
4= Overall charge on a compound is always 0
5= In Polyatomic ions, the sum of all the oxidation numbers is equal to the overall charge of the ion
What are metals with high oxidation states used as?
Oxidising agents
What is a Ligand?
Molecules or anions (negative) which attach to the metal atom in a complex via dative bonds
