Transition Metals Flashcards
What is a complex
A central metal atom or ion that is surrounded by ligands which are bonded to the central atom or ion by coordinate bonds
What is a ligand
A ligand is an anion or molecule with a lone pair of electrons that forms a coordinate bond with a central metal atom or ion in a complex
What is a heterogeneous catalyst
A catalyst that is in a different state from the reactants
What is a transition metal
A d-block element that forms at least one ion with a partially filled d sub-shell
What is a complex ion
A central metal atom or ion with ligands bonded by coordinate bonds (dative covalent bonds)
Coordination number
The number of coordinate bonds to a central metal atom or ion in a complex
Monodentate ligand
A ligand which uses only one lone pair of electrons to form a coordinate bond with a central metal atom or ion in a complex
Geometric isomers
Molecules with the same structural formula but different arrangement of atoms
Ligand substitution
A reaction in which one ligand in a complex is replaced by another ligand
Colours of Cr3+
In water- green
In NaOH and NH3- green-blue
Not soluble in excess NH3- may turn purple in conc NH3
Colours of Mn+
In water- pink
In NaOH and NH3- white ppt- slowly turns black on standing
Not soluble in excess NH3
Colours of Fe2+
In water- green
In NaOH and NH3- green ppt
Doesn’t dissolve in excess NH3
Colours of Fe3+
In water- yellow
In NaOH and NH3- brown ppt
Doesn’t dissolve in excess NH3
Colours if Co2+
In water- pink
In NaOH and NH3- blue ppt
Forms a yellow solution that turns brown on standing in excess NH3
Colours of Ni2+
In water- green
In NaOH and NH3- green ppt
Forms a blue solution in excess NH3
