Test for NH4
Add to test tube with 4-5cm dilute NaOH. Warm mixture gently abs test with damp universal indicator.
Universal indicator turns blue, pungent smell.
Expose to glass rod with conc.HCl solution. White smoke appears
Test for halide ions
Dissolve spatula measure in water and shake to mix.
Add dilute nitric acid and a few drops of AgNO3 solution
Chloride ion
White ppt forms
Soluble in both conc and dilute ammonia
Bromide ion
Cream ppt forms
Soluble in conc ammonia and insoluble in dilute
Iodide ion
Yellow ppt forms
Insoluble in both conc and dilute ammonia solutions
Sulfate ions
Dissolve in 2-3cm of water.
Add dilute nitric acid and 3-4 drops of BaCl solution. Shake to mix.
White ppt forms
Carbonate ions
Dissolve in water. Add 1cm dilute nitric acid and collect any gas evolved with a pipette.
Bubble gas through limewater.
