Transition Elements Flashcards
1
Q
What are the properties of the transition elements? (4 points)
A
1) good conductors of heat and electricity
2) very dense, strong and shiny
3) much less reactive than group 1 metals
4) high melting and boiling points
2
Q
What are the transition metals and their compounds good at and what are three examples?
A
They are good at making catalysts. Three example are:
1) iron - making ammonia (Haber process)
2) manganese oxide - decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
3) nickel - turning oils into fats for margarine
3
Q
What do transition elements have more than one of?
A
They have more than one ion, for example Cu+ and Cu2+, and Cr2+ and Cr3+
