Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
What is the functional group for carboxylic acids?
The functional group is -COOH.
What do they produce when reacted with carbonates and what is an example?
A salt, water and carbon dioxide.
Ethanoic acid + sodium carbonate —> sodium ethanoate + water + carbon dioxide
How can ethanoic acid be made and what is it used for?
Ethanoic acid can be made by oxidising ethanol, and it can be dissolved in water to make vinegar (flavouring and preserving foods).
How are carboxylic acids used in industry?
If they have longer chains of carbon atoms they are used to make soaps and detergents. They are also used in the preparation of esters.
Why isn’t ethanoic acid chosen as a solvent?
It makes the solution acidic.
