Transformers Flashcards
4 components needed
alternating current
iron core
primary coil
secondary coil
why do you need an alternating current?
need a change in magnetic field to induce a potential difference
how does a transformer work? 5
As current flows through primary coil generates a change in magnetic field magnetic field transmitted along iron core passes through secondary coil inducing a potential difference
why doesn’t a direct current work?
no induction in secondary coil because you need a changing field which is why you need an alternating current
step up transformer
more turns in the secondary coil
step down transformer
more turns in the primary coil
potential difference across the secondary coil is greater than the primary coil
step up transformer
potential difference across the primary coil is greater than the secondary coil
step down transformer
what does the iron core do and don’t
does transfer changing magnetic field
not current/ electricity
