Transformers Flashcards
What does a transformer do?
changes the size of alternating voltage by having two separate coils with different number of turns
What is a transformer made of?
two coils of wire linked by laminated iron core
What is the function of iron core?
guide magnetic field between coils
Why is the iron core laminated?
so that current is not induced in it which would reduce efficiency
How does a transformer work?
-AC current in primary coil produces changing magnetic field in core which travels to secondary coil
This induces alternating p.d. across the ends of the secondary coil
p. d. across primary coil
- ———————————– =
p. d. across secondary coil
no. of turns on primary coil
- ————————————–
no. of turns on secondary coil
What effect does changing the number of the coils have ?
changes the voltage output
What is a step-up transformer?
more coils on secondary coil
increases voltage - reduces current
What is a step-down transformer?
less coils on secondary coil
decreases voltage - more current
How efficient are transformers?
almost 100% - therefore power output from transformer is almost same as power input
Vp x Ip =
Vs x Is
What type of transformers are used in the National Grid?
step-up transformer in overhead cables
from 25 kV to 132 kV
- decreases current - less heat loss - more efficient
What happens when voltage reaches towns?
step-down transformer is used to decrease voltage to needed supply
